The aim of such an installation is to produce a blend of two different oil products in line.

This is done by bringing together a flow of low and high viscosity media in a known relation (flow ratio) and thereafter creating a turbulent flow in a static mixer. This mixer will create a homogeneous mix of both products, thus creating an oil product with a lower viscosity grade.

The flow of the high-viscous product (HFO) is regulated by a frequency controlled pump to a fixed set-point, calculated from the desired flow in line. To this product, a flow of MDO is added, regulated by means of a 2-way electrically operated control valve.

Adjusting the blend ratio by regulation of the MDO-flow gives a changing viscosity grade of the resulting product (blend).

The unit can also be used for delivery of HFO or MDO.

Viscosity Measurement & Control

During initial start-up, the flow is ramped up to the desired value. At this stage of the blending process ratio control is used to produce the blend product. This ratio is determined using known IF grade values of the MDO and HFO. Since these values may vary from the actual values, the initial blend result may deviate from the desired blend.

However, in this installation, a VAF Viscosense®2 viscosity transmitter constantly monitors the blend for the dynamic viscosity. The blend ratio is then adjusted automatically using the measured viscosity at the process temperature. As such the desired blend viscosity (temperature corrected to 50°C) is delivered. This process continues via a feedback system thus eliminating any errors caused by any changes to the HFO or MDO characteristics during the blend batch.

Installation & Control

The blender can either be installed on the open deck or (preferably) containerized. For easier operation, the blender control unit (BCU) is installed in the cargo operation room or wheel house.
