Optical Torque Measurement

The use of a T-Sense® torque measuring system means efficiency improvement, overload protection and prevention of breakdown costs. For example, in the shipping industry its application has led in some cases to fuel savings of up to 5%.

The T-Sense® Torque measuring system is based on optical displacement technology and can be mounted around propeller or drive shafts. The measuring tolerance on torque is less than 0,25% F.S.D., due to the presence of LED and a highly accurate optical cell.

The measurements of the T-Sense® (speed, torque, power) can be monitored on the PEM4 Propulsion Efficiency Monitor.

The system can be upgraded when aSPU3Signal Processing Unit is also installed. The SPU3 can be connected to one or two T-Sense® torque measuring systems, and up to six engines/consumers (Max. 12 VAF flowmeters), as well as other sensors available onboard, such as speed log, GPS, generator power, anemometer, inclinometer, draught meters and more, for engine performance monitoring onboard the vessel.

This integrated system enables monitoring of the following, amongst others:

  • Total Energy
  • Actual fuel consumption – in litres or kgs- per engine
  • Fuel consumption – in litres or kgs- per nautical mile
  • Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (g/kWh)
  • Engine performance related to consumed fuel and nautical/navigational data

Upon request, the system can be upgraded even further, to transmit the measured data to your office.
